More than simply studying abroad, students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik (UMG) created a work that brings the story of Indonesia into the international digital space.
Students from the Information Systems Study Program at UMG developed a digital platform introducing Indonesian culture as part of the International Community Service Program (KKN Internasional) at INTI International University, Malaysia. Through this initiative, UMG students utilized their technological skills to introduce Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage to an international audience.
Held on June 19, 2025, the activity became an international experience that brought together the students’ technological competencies and Indonesia’s cultural richness. Rather than simply gaining experience from a new environment, UMG students created something that could serve as a medium for introducing Indonesia through digital technology. Through the platform, UMG Information Systems students demonstrated that technological skills can be transformed into work that carries not only academic value, but also a cultural message. The platform provides a digital space to introduce Indonesia’s diversity while expanding the ways students can share cultural information with audiences beyond Indonesia.
The experience also gave the students an opportunity to apply what they had learned throughout their studies in a real and different environment. As part of an international programme, they were encouraged to develop ideas, work creatively, and produce a project that represents the capabilities of UMG students.
More than simply developing a digital platform, the initiative demonstrates how UMG students can take an active role in introducing Indonesia’s identity and cultural richness through the skills they possess. The technology they learn in the classroom was transformed into a medium for bringing Indonesian culture into a wider space.
Participation in the International Community Service Program also became part of the students’ journey in developing cross-cultural experiences and broadening their global perspectives. They were not only participants learning from an international environment, but also students bringing their own work and stories from Indonesia.
For the UMG Information Systems Study Program, the project demonstrates how technological competencies can be applied to a wide range of purposes, including cultural communication. For the students themselves, the experience became an opportunity to show that knowledge, creativity, and the courage to create can carry the name of UMG into an international environment.
Through this initiative, UMG continues to provide students with opportunities to grow through global experiences while creating work with broader meaning. They did not simply travel abroad to learn; they went to create, to represent Indonesia, and to leave something meaningful behind through their international journey.
