Academic breaks are often associated with rest and relaxation. However, this is not the case for international students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik (UMG). Instead of taking time off, they are using the break productively by joining the Intensive BIPA Pre-Lecture Class to strengthen their Indonesian language skills.

This program is designed as a strategic preparatory step before the start of regular lectures. Recognizing that language proficiency plays a crucial role in academic success, UMG provides this intensive course to ensure that international students are well-equipped for their academic journey. With stronger language skills, students can better understand lecture materials and actively engage in classroom discussions.

The Head of the International Relations Office (IRO)of UMG, Paulina, S.Pd., M.Pd., stated that this initiative reflects the university’s commitment to supporting international students’ adaptation process.

“Language is the foundation of learning. We want to ensure that international students are fully prepared before lectures begin. Through the Intensive BIPA Pre-Lecture Class, they can improve their fluency, build confidence, and understand the academic context they will encounter in their studies,” she explained.

The program focuses on developing four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are also introduced to academic vocabulary and real-life communication scenarios commonly found in university settings. Through an interactive and structured learning approach, students are expected to adapt more quickly and participate in lectures without significant language barriers.

Through this initiative, UMG once again demonstrates its commitment not only to welcoming students from around the world but also to ensuring their academic and social readiness.
